Key takeaways

  • Match the band to your measured cadence, at full time or half time; both put the beat on your footstrike.
  • True 160 and 180 BPM songs are rarer than playlists suggest; most are 80 or 90 BPM songs at half time.
  • Build three lists for easy, tempo and interval runs, with a warm-up band below and a cool-down band after.
  • Check every tempo against a database; copied lists are often wrong.

Most lists of running songs by BPM are copied from each other and half the tempos are wrong. Every song below was checked against SongBPM or Tunebat on 15 October 2026, and only songs whose tempo those databases confirm are listed. Four full-time bands, one half-time band, and a method for using them.

How to use a running playlist by BPM

Match the band to your cadence, not to how fast you want to feel. Count steps for thirty seconds and double it, or read steps per minute from your watch, then pick the band within a few BPM. A song lands on your footstrike at full time, one beat per step, or at half time, one beat every second step; both give the economy effect the synchrony research found. The best BPM for running guide explains how to measure cadence and why 180 is not a universal target.

The bands below are defined by the database tempo, with the cadence each one fits.

BPM databases occasionally list a song at half or double its felt tempo; where SongBPM and Tunebat disagree, both figures are shown.

150 BPM running songs

The easy-run band for runners whose cadence sits in the high 140s and low 150s, and a warm-up band for everyone else. Rock and pop-punk live here.

160 BPM running songs

The most useful band for most adults on most runs, and the tempo Spotify reports as the most-selected in its Running Mode. Pop-punk from the late nineties and early 2000s is the richest seam. Many songs that feel like 160 are 80 at half time, and those are in the half-time band below.

To fill out a 160 list, add the half-time band's 80 BPM songs, which land on every second step at 160, and let a tempo tool such as Spotify's Running Mode find more at a 160 target.

170 BPM running songs

The tempo-run band, and the richest one: synth-pop, emo and a surprising amount of hip-hop sit at 169 to 174 BPM. Every song here also works at half time for a runner at 85 to 87 steps per minute on a walk-run day.

180 BPM running songs

The interval band. Punk is the home of a true 176 to 190 BPM, and the list is short because few mainstream songs sit this fast at full time; most "180 BPM" playlists are actually 90 BPM songs, which are in the half-time band below. Only songs you have never skipped when it hurt belong here.

For a runner at 180 steps per minute, any 90 BPM song at half time does the same job with far more choice, which is how most interval playlists should be built.

Half-time: 80 to 90 BPM songs for a 160 to 180 cadence

Songs the databases list at 80 to 90 BPM, which land on every second step at 160 to 180. This is where most hip-hop and a lot of pop sits, and it is the band that makes a long easy run bearable: the beat holds your feet without the relentlessness of a full-time 170.

Every song in the 170 band also has a half-time reading of 85 to 87, so a runner at 86 steps per minute walking briskly, or a cyclist at 86 rpm, can use that list unchanged.

How to build the playlist

  1. Measure cadence on the run the list is for. Easy, tempo and interval runs give three different numbers; build three lists.
  2. Warm-up, 8 to 10 minutes: start one band below your easy cadence, at half time if you have it, and finish in the easy band.
  3. Main block: the band that matches the run. For an easy or zone 2 run, mix the full-time band with its half-time equivalent so the energy stays calm. For a tempo run, stay full time. For intervals, full time only, and only songs that have carried hard efforts before.
  4. Cool-down, 5 to 8 minutes: half-time songs one band below, then anything slow.
  5. Check energy, not just tempo. A fast quiet song does not carry an interval; a dense slow one makes an easy run harder than planned.
  6. Rotate. Familiar songs lose their arousal effect; swap a few each month.

For a long run in a half-marathon plan, build the main block almost entirely from the half-time band at your easy cadence and save the full-time 170s for the last twenty minutes.

How PeakBeat builds it for you

PeakBeat analyses every track in your library once for BPM and energy, reads cadence live from the watch, and picks the next track at half, single or double time to fit your stride, targeting cadence ±4 BPM. Its Workout DJ builds a warm-up, build, peak and cool-down block from your library in one tap, saves your PR songs for the peak and does not repeat a track.

On music you own it time-stretches up to 15% so the beat lands exactly; on streaming services it chooses the next track as a smart remote. It is in private beta.

Questions

What BPM songs are best for running?
Songs at your cadence or half of it. Most adults run easy at 160 to 170 steps per minute, so 160 to 170 BPM at full time or 80 to 85 at half time. Faster runners and intervals move up to the 180 band.
Are 170 BPM songs good for running?
For a cadence of 166 to 175, yes, and it is the richest band for well-known music: Blinding Lights, Lose Yourself, Stressed Out and Cruel Summer all sit at 170 to 171. Each also works at half time for a brisk walk.
What songs are 180 BPM?
Few mainstream songs sit at a true 180: Blitzkrieg Bop at 176 to 180, Despacito at 178, American Idiot and Starboy at 186, Rockaway Beach at 187. Most 180 BPM playlists are 90 BPM songs at half time, which work just as well.
How do I check a song's BPM?
Search the song on SongBPM or Tunebat and check that the figure matches the felt beat; both sites sometimes list a track at half or double its tempo. Where they disagree, as with Take On Me at 169 and 84, both readings are listed above.
Does the beat need to match my cadence exactly?
Within a few BPM. PeakBeat targets cadence ±4 BPM; a song fifteen BPM off will not entrain. Pick the band, not a single number, and let the half-time trick widen the choice.
