Music that happens to be playing while you run is pleasant. Music whose beat lands on your footstrike is a different thing physiologically, and two well-controlled studies show how different.
The oxygen finding
Bacon, Myers and Karageorghis had non-competitive athletes cycle with music synchronised to their pedal rate, then with the same music slightly out of sync. Oxygen consumption was 7.4% lower in the synchronous condition for the same work, with no difference in perceived exertion or heart rate. The body was simply more efficient when the beat and the movement agreed.
The endurance finding
Terry and colleagues took eleven elite triathletes onto a treadmill with self-selected motivational music, a neutral equivalent, and silence, all synchronised to stride. Time to exhaustion was 18.1% longer with motivational music and 19.7% longer with neutral music than with none. The mood of the music barely mattered; the synchrony did. Running economy improved in both music conditions.
Why synchrony works
Rhythm entrains movement. A regular external beat reduces the variability of stride timing, and a more regular stride costs less energy. It also anchors cadence when fatigue would otherwise let it drift downward, which is where form deteriorates and injury risk climbs. The effect is mechanical, which is why it survives high intensity where the mood effect fades.
