Everyone knows music helps a workout. The question worth asking is how much, on what, and whether it still helps when the effort gets hard. Terry and Karageorghis answered it across 139 studies.

The numbers

The 2020 Psychological Bulletin meta-analysis pooled 598 effect sizes from 3,599 participants. Music improved affective valence, how good the exercise felt, by g = 0.48; physical performance by g = 0.31; perceived exertion fell by g = 0.22; and oxygen consumption for the same work fell by g = 0.15. In plain terms: people went harder, felt it less, and used slightly less fuel doing it.

These are small to medium effects, consistent across running, cycling, strength and circuit work, and they hold in trained and untrained people.

Where the effect comes from

Two mechanisms carry most of the weight. Dissociation: music occupies attention that would otherwise be spent monitoring fatigue, which is why perceived exertion drops most at low to moderate intensity. Synchrony: moving in time with a beat reduces the metabolic cost of the movement, which is why oxygen consumption drops when tempo matches cadence. The first mechanism fades as intensity rises past about 75% of max heart rate; the second does not.

What it means for a hard session

Near threshold, music stops making the effort feel easier; the body's signals are too loud to drown out. What it still does is stabilise cadence and lift mood, which is enough to keep an interval honest. The practical rule: choose music for mood in warm-ups and easy work, and for tempo in hard work.
