Running cadence to BPM calculator

Count your steps for 30 seconds on an easy run. The calculator gives you the tempo to search for in Spotify, and the calmer half-time option.

How it works

Cadence is steps per minute. Music at the same number of beats per minute puts a beat on every footstrike, and studies find runners tend to fall into step with it. Most pop music sits at 80 to 90 BPM, so at half your cadence it lands on every second step: calmer, more choice, same rhythm.

What to do with the number

Type the tempo into Spotify Running Mode or a BPM search, or pick from our list of songs whose tempos we checked against a BPM database. Use full-time for short hard efforts and half-time for long easy runs.

PeakBeat does this from your own data, every day. Your effort writes the setlist. Join the free beta →

Questions

What is a good running cadence?
Most recreational runners sit between 150 and 180 steps per minute. There is no single right number; small increases of around 5% can reduce loading per step, but change it gradually.
Should I run faster to match the music?
No. Pick music to match your cadence, not the other way round. Raising cadence is a separate, gradual change.
Why does a half-time tempo work?
The beat still lands on every second footstrike, so the rhythm holds while the music is less relentless.
