Find your cadence first
Count right-foot strikes for thirty seconds on an easy run and multiply by four, or read steps per minute from your watch. Most adults land between 160 and 180; taller and slower runners sit lower, shorter and faster runners higher. Note that cadence rises with pace, so measure at the pace the playlist is for.
Half time is your friend
A 172 spm stride can be matched by a 172 BPM track, which is fast and rare, or by an 86 BPM track with the beat on every other step, which is most of hip-hop, half of pop and a large part of rock. Double time works the other way for very slow songs. The synchrony research does not care which; the body locks to the beat whether it lands on every step or every second one.

- Easy runs, 160 to 170 spm: 80 to 85 BPM or 160 to 170 BPM; calm energy.
- Tempo runs, 170 to 180 spm: 85 to 90 or 170 to 180 BPM; driving but not frantic.
- Intervals, 180+ spm: 90 to 95 or 180 to 190 BPM, and only songs you have never skipped when it hurt.
