The floor version and what it predicted

Brito and colleagues asked 2,002 adults aged 51 to 80 to sit on the floor and get back up, scoring them out of ten with a point deducted for each hand, knee or forearm used and half a point for a wobble. Over six years, a score below eight was associated with roughly double the death rate, and each one-point improvement was linked to a 21% reduction in mortality. A 2025 follow-up in the same journal confirmed that the score predicted both natural and cardiovascular deaths.

The chair version and why it scales

The 30-second chair stand counts how many times you can stand fully from a standard chair and sit again in half a minute, arms crossed. It measures lower-body power and balance, the two things that decide whether a slip becomes a fall. Age-graded norms exist from the Rikli and Jones Senior Fitness Test; below about 12 in your sixties is a flag, and the numbers scale up for younger adults.

It is also trainable in weeks. Squats, step-ups and the test itself move the count quickly, which makes it a satisfying number to own.
