The dead hang has become the internet's favourite longevity test, which means it has also acquired a lot of invented standards. Here are sensible ones, why the test matters, and how to move your number.
Standards that hold up
For healthy adults, a passive dead hang of 30 seconds is a floor, 60 seconds is solid, 90 seconds is strong and two minutes is elite. Age matters less than people expect until the sixties, and even then the standards shift by tens of seconds, not halves. The published grip-strength norms decline about 1 kg a year after fifty; the hang tracks them.
What the test measures
Grip endurance, forearm strength, shoulder stability and the willingness to tolerate discomfort, in that order. It is a good stand-in for the dynamometer grip test that predicted mortality in the PURE study, and it exposes shoulder problems that a squeeze test misses.
A four-week plan
- Week 1. Three sets of hangs to 70% of your max, three days a week. Active hang (shoulders pulled down) if a passive hang bothers your shoulders.
- Week 2. Add a fourth set and one max attempt at the end of the week.
- Week 3. Two sets of hangs plus farmer's carries, heavy, 40 metres, three times.
- Week 4. Deload to two sets, then retest at the same time of day as your baseline.
Most people who start under 30 seconds double their time in a month.
